Clinical Trainee Placement

... is an education experience for health professionals interested in obtaining clinical hours for writing examinations or obtaining credentials.

A clinical trainee is not a student and not an employee of HHS.  The experience is unpaid and includes direct patient care activities.  The hospital does not arrange clinical trainee placements for international learners.

Most programs will require that you pay a fee, which includes the clinical experience, learning materials and administration. 

You will need to purchase and keep in force throughout your experience a policy of liability insurance in an amount not less than $5,000,000 per occurrence inclusive of coverage for professional liability and third-party property damage.  You shall produce for inspection, evidence of the above-mentioned insurance coverage.

You are not deemed to be a learner under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and would not quality for entitlement under this legislation.  As a clinical trainee, you will need to obtain private accident benefit coverage.  If you are employed, it may be possible that you would quality for WSIB coverage under that organization.

The Pre-placement Immunization Form for Learners needs to be completed.

This form is to be sent to the Office of Student Affairs by fax, once your placement has been approved.  If you have already completed immunization forms for your school, you may submit these instead for clearance by our hospital.  Please note that you need to provide the following information:

  • current evidence of vaccination or immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella
  • documentation regarding Hepatitis B immunity status
  • current evidence of vaccination or immunity regarding tetanus and diphtheria
  • results of a 2-step TB skin test.

You may need to complete a police check.  This is required for placements within selected clinical areas of the McMaster Children's Hospital. 

You will need to sign a Confidentiality Agreement and a Learner Undertaking and Agreement for a Clinical Trainee Placement.  These will be sent to you once the details of your placement have been confirmed.
